Often passed through en route to the peaks above, Cwm Eigiau is a worthwhile destination in itself.

As with so many places in North Wales, this wild, melancholy valley is dotted with reminders of its links to the slate industry. It’s hard to believe that this remote place was once a hive of activity.

Sadly, it’s also associated with disaster: in November 1925, 16 people died when the dam at Llyn Eigiau gave way, flooding the village of Dolgarrog. Food for thought while you’re enjoying your lunch.
